Better health for rural communities

Wilderness Health members serve a population of approximately 450,000 people in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.

Like all rural areas, these communities face unique healthcare challenges. Many Wilderness Health members are located in some of the region’s most remote areas and cover large geographical areas, with large distances between providers.

Service Area Highlights:

According to the County Health Rankings, all counties in Wilderness Health’s service area:

  • Have more people over age 65 than state and national averages.
  • Consistently report more Poor/Fair Health, Poor Physical Health Days and Poor Mental Health Days than the state averages.
  • Rank in the bottom 20 percent for Health Ranking (except for Cook, the smallest population).

Wilderness Health empowers independent providers to collaborate to improve patient care, reduce costs and improve efficiencies throughout our communities.
